We left Half Moon Bay at 6am Monday morning (9/22). The whole crew was excited for our first day of cruising. Even the kids were up and ready for adventure at an early hour. It was cute to watch them chatting to each other, snuggled in their bunks, about where we were going and what to expect.
The seas were smooth but there was a long, rolling ocean swell. We motored all morning and finally picked up some wind close to Pigeon Point. We pulled into Santa Cruz and were tied up to the dock by 3pm. We love Santa Cruz Harbor. They have nice clean docks and facilities, although a bit overpriced at $50/night. We met fellow cruisers, John & Sheldon on S/V A Deux. They are heading down to San Diego. I'm sure we'll be following each other down.
Today we headed to Monterey. It was a nice short run at only 22 NM - no wind. We spotted several whales breeching. Luckily, not too close to the boat. We also saw some dolphins, sea lions, seals, and otters. We are currently tied to a mooring ball. I'm listening to the sea lions bark from the wharf and the waves gently lapping on the shore nearby. We plan on staying here for a few days to let a weather system pass. I'm excited to take the girls to some museums and do some exploring on kayaks.
